PianoLock helps you place a deliberate practice step between an impulse and a distracting app. You remain responsible for your device, schedule, permissions, subscriptions, and safety.
1. Agreement to these Terms
These Terms of Use (“Terms”) are an agreement between you and Khaled Barakat, a sole proprietor based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, operating PianoLock (“PianoLock,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). They govern your use of the PianoLock mobile application, website, support, and related services (collectively, the “Service”).
By downloading, purchasing, accessing, or using the Service, you agree to these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use PianoLock.
The app license is also subject to Apple’s Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement (“Apple Standard EULA”), unless a different agreement is presented through the App Store. These Terms supplement that license. Mandatory consumer protections and Apple’s applicable terms prevail where required.
2. Eligibility
You must be legally capable of agreeing to these Terms. If you are a minor where you live, a parent or legal guardian must review and approve your use and any subscription purchase. You may use the Service only where it is lawfully available and on compatible Apple hardware and software.
3. What PianoLock does
PianoLock uses Apple Screen Time frameworks to shield a private selection of apps during a schedule you configure. During a foreground practice session, PianoLock may verify piano activity through compatible MIDI input or on-device microphone analysis. Completing the required active practice grants temporary access, after which iOS is instructed to shield the selection again.
Features can depend on your iPhone, iOS version, Screen Time authorization, microphone permission, MIDI hardware and adapters, App Store entitlement, network availability, and Apple system behavior. Compatibility is not guaranteed for every keyboard, accessory, app, region, or iOS release.
4. Limited license
Subject to these Terms and the Apple Standard EULA, we grant you a limited, personal, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use PianoLock on Apple-branded devices you own or control, solely for personal, non-commercial use and as permitted by Apple’s Usage Rules.
You may not copy, distribute, sell, rent, sublicense, reverse engineer, interfere with, bypass, or create derivative works of the Service, except to the extent a restriction is prohibited by applicable law.
5. Permissions, user control, and safety
You choose the apps, schedule, practice requirement, reward duration, piano input, and whether PianoLock remains enabled. You can revoke iOS permissions, use available safety exits, or turn off PianoLock. You are responsible for configuring rules that fit your routine.
iOS may delay, interrupt, or change Screen Time enforcement and Device Activity callbacks. Audio detection can be affected by room noise, phone placement, piano tuning, calls, other audio sessions, or hardware. MIDI can disconnect or be generated by software. No detection or blocking system is error-free or impossible to bypass.
6. Subscriptions, trials, and billing
Plans
PianoLock may offer auto-renewable yearly and weekly subscriptions. Planned U.S. launch pricing is US$49.99 per year, with a three-day introductory trial for eligible new subscribers, and US$9.99 per week without a trial. Actual pricing, currency, taxes, trial eligibility, and offer availability are shown in Apple’s purchase sheet and may vary by region or change prospectively.
Automatic renewal
A subscription renews automatically for the same duration unless you cancel it through your Apple Account before the renewal is processed. Apple charges the payment method associated with your Apple Account. The renewal price and timing presented by Apple at purchase or before a permitted price change control your transaction.
Free trial
If Apple confirms you are eligible for a free trial, you receive subscription access for the displayed trial period. Unless cancelled, the subscription converts to the paid yearly plan at the price Apple displays. Trial eligibility is determined by Apple and may be limited to one introductory offer within the subscription group.
Cancellation and plan changes
Manage, cancel, upgrade, or downgrade through Apple’s subscription settings. Deleting PianoLock does not cancel a subscription. Cancellation normally stops future renewal while access continues until the end of the current paid period. Upgrades, downgrades, and crossgrades take effect according to Apple’s subscription rules.
Refunds and billing issues
Apple handles payment collection, billing recovery, refunds, and transaction decisions. Refund requests are subject to Apple’s rules and can be submitted through reportaproblem.apple.com. If Apple expires, refunds, or revokes an entitlement, paid enforcement ends and PianoLock is designed to remove shields safely.
Restoring purchases
Use Restore Purchases in PianoLock with the Apple Account that made the purchase. Restoration depends on Apple’s servers and an eligible transaction.
7. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use PianoLock unlawfully or to violate another person’s rights.
- Attempt to compromise, overload, probe, or disrupt the Service or its providers.
- Use automated means to scrape, copy, or access the Service where not permitted.
- Misrepresent your relationship with PianoLock.
- Use the Service to control another person’s device without authority and informed consent.
- Circumvent purchase systems, distribute modified builds, or exploit the free demonstration.
8. Ownership and feedback
PianoLock, its branding, interface, software, text, graphics, and other materials are owned by us or our licensors and are protected by applicable intellectual-property laws. These Terms do not transfer ownership to you.
If you voluntarily send suggestions or feedback, you permit us to use them without restriction or compensation, while we remain subject to the Privacy Policy for any personal information included.
9. Apple and other third-party services
PianoLock relies on services and frameworks provided by Apple and may use limited providers for hosting, support email, and diagnostics. Third-party services are governed by their own terms and privacy policies. We are not responsible for third-party services outside our reasonable control.
As between you and PianoLock, not Apple, we are responsible for the PianoLock app and its content, subject to the Apple Standard EULA. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for PianoLock. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of the applicable app license and may enforce it against you.
10. Disclaimers
To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Service is provided “as is” and “as available.” We disclaim implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, uninterrupted availability, accuracy, and error-free operation.
We do not promise that PianoLock will improve your practice, reduce screen time, detect every honest session, reject every invalid input, or apply every shield at an exact second. Nothing in these Terms excludes warranties or rights that cannot lawfully be excluded.
11. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, PianoLock and its operator will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages; loss of data, profits, opportunity, goodwill, or device access; or harm resulting from your configuration, reliance on blocking, unavailable essential apps, accessory failure, or third-party services.
Where liability cannot be excluded, our aggregate liability arising from the Service will not exceed the greater of the amount you paid for PianoLock in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim or US$50. This limitation does not apply where prohibited by consumer law or to liability that cannot legally be limited.
12. Suspension and termination
You may stop using PianoLock at any time. We may suspend or terminate access if you materially violate these Terms, create risk or legal exposure, misuse the Service, or if continuing the Service becomes unlawful or impracticable. Provisions that by nature should survive termination—including ownership, disclaimers, liability limitations, and governing law—will survive.
13. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the United Arab Emirates and the applicable laws of the Emirate of Dubai, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Courts with jurisdiction in Dubai will have non-exclusive jurisdiction.
If you are a consumer, this section does not remove mandatory rights or access to courts granted by the law of your country or region. Before filing a dispute, please contact us so we can try to resolve the issue informally.
14. Changes to the Service or Terms
We may update the Service and these Terms. If a change is material, we will provide reasonable notice through the app, App Store listing, website, or another appropriate channel. Changes apply prospectively from their stated effective date. Continued use after that date means you accept the revised Terms, where permitted by law.
