Troubleshooting

One check at
a time.

PianoLock coordinates several private iOS systems. Work through the relevant section in order, then reopen PianoLock to refresh its status.

My selected apps are not blocked
  1. Open PianoLock and confirm it says Blocking active.
  2. Open Settings in PianoLock and confirm your current time is inside an active schedule window.
  3. Confirm at least one app is selected under Protected Apps.
  4. In iPhone Settings, confirm PianoLock still has Screen Time / Family Controls authorization.
  5. Return to PianoLock and wait a few seconds for schedule reconciliation.

If you deliberately turned PianoLock off, enable it again from PianoLock Settings. If a paid entitlement expired or was revoked, restore or renew access before enabling enforcement.

Microphone detection is inconsistent
  1. Confirm microphone permission is enabled for PianoLock in iPhone Settings.
  2. Place the iPhone where it can clearly hear the piano, away from loud speakers or conversation.
  3. Play one clean note or phrase at a normal volume; do not tap the phone microphone.
  4. Close other apps that are using the microphone or changing the active audio session.
  5. Start a practice session. The first screen shows Mic live and asks you to play C, then E, then G, so you can confirm detection before the timer starts.

Detection quality varies with room noise, piano tone, distance, and iPhone hardware. Raw microphone audio is analyzed on-device and is not recorded or uploaded by PianoLock.

My digital piano or MIDI source is not detected
  1. Turn the piano on before you start a practice session.
  2. Reconnect the USB adapter, cable, or Bluetooth MIDI session.
  3. Confirm the accessory supports MIDI data, not audio output only.
  4. Start a practice session and check the status reads MIDI live with your keyboard named beneath it.
  5. Play C, then E, then G. Each note you play is shown as it arrives.
  6. If the source disconnects mid-session, the timer pauses. Reconnect the keyboard and playing resumes counting.

A Lightning-to-USB adapter may require external power depending on the keyboard.

Your piano must support Bluetooth MIDI. Bluetooth audio alone cannot send notes to PianoLock.

Bluetooth MIDI pianos never appear in iPhone Settings → Bluetooth. iOS keeps them out of that list deliberately, so PianoLock presents Apple’s pairing screen itself. Tap Pair Bluetooth MIDI when you set up your piano, or in the MIDI status card when you start a practice session. If you do not see that button, update PianoLock from the App Store.

You can also pair through Apple’s free GarageBand app, which holds system-wide: open any project, tap the Settings button in the control bar, then AdvancedBluetooth MIDI Devices, tap your piano and switch Connect on. Apple documents the steps in its GarageBand guide.

I finished practice but an app is still shielded
  1. Return to PianoLock and confirm the success screen shows earned access.
  2. Tap Use earned access and wait a few seconds.
  3. Open the protected app again from the Home Screen.
  4. If the shield remains, return to PianoLock so it can reconcile the current reward state.

Earned access ends at the displayed time even if PianoLock is force-closed. iOS should reapply the shield automatically when the reward expires.

Purchase, restore, cancellation, or refund help
  • Restore: open the PianoLock paywall or Settings and choose Restore Purchases while signed into the Apple Account that bought the subscription.
  • Manage or cancel: use Apple’s subscription settings. Deleting PianoLock does not cancel a subscription.
  • Refund: Apple controls billing and refund decisions. Submit eligible requests at reportaproblem.apple.com.
  • Wrong price or currency: the Apple purchase sheet is authoritative for your storefront, taxes, trial eligibility, and renewal price.
I need access and cannot practice right now

PianoLock is designed never to trap you. Use the available safety controls in this order:

  1. Emergency Unlock grants temporary access once per day.
  2. Pause until tomorrow removes shields for the rest of the current schedule window and resumes automatically next window.
  3. Turn Off PianoLock removes enforcement until you enable it again.

Keep banking, authentication, health, transportation, emergency, and other essential apps outside your protected selection.

How do I send useful diagnostic information?

The more precisely you can describe the moment it broke, the faster we can reproduce it. Include:

  1. Your iPhone model and iOS version.
  2. Whether you use microphone or MIDI, and which piano or keyboard.
  3. What you expected to happen, and what happened instead.
  4. Roughly when it happened, and whether it happens every time or occasionally.
  5. A screen recording or photo of the screen, if you can capture one.

Do not send passwords, payment-card details, Apple Account credentials, raw Screen Time tokens, or unrelated personal files.

Reinstalling, resetting, or moving to a new iPhone

Normal app settings and progress are stored locally and may be removed when the app is deleted. The one-time demonstration marker is stored separately in iOS Keychain and may survive a reinstall. Purchases can be restored with the Apple Account that made them. PianoLock does not currently provide a cloud account that syncs rules or progress between devices.

Still stuck?

Send the exact
moment it broke.

Include your iPhone model, iOS version, input method, and the message shown in PianoLock. We’ll help you narrow it down.
